My first time out after purchasing the fishing gear was at Hutto Lake Park. It's nice because it's nearby, relatively easy to fish, and since it's owned by the City of Hutto anyone can fish there. One of the downsides is it's catch & release , meaning once you catch a fish you have to immediately release them. For me, though, this is good as I wasn't expecting to catch many fish, and even if I did, I wasn't going to keep them.
I decided to go the novice route and just try some fishing from the dock. Most of my childhood spent fishing were for sunfish, mainly bluegill. However, I wanted to try to see if I could catch something a little bigger, like a bass. So, I rigged-up a 4" Zoom grub with a tail and went to work. After a long time of catching nothing from the north side of the dock, I decided to try the south end. Within about 10 mins I finally caught my first fish - a 14" crappie. It's funny, because I had been away from fishing for so long, I thought it was a bass at first. It wasn't until I went home and compared the pictures to references online did I realize it was a crappie.
It was exciting getting my first fish, and to be honest this was the first crappie I had ever caught in my life. After taking a couple of pictures, I released him on the north side, and went back to work on the south side. It didn't take long, and I landed my second crappie - a 13" one:
I fished for about another hour without getting anything else, which was a bummer. But I was happy with the results of my first time out fishing in a long time.
BTW, here are some pictures of my rod+reel and jig I used to catch the fish:
